1. The Basics

The Orchid PBX416 has capacity for 16 extensions and 4 exchange lines. The system provides 21 RJ-11 sockets...4 for lines, 16 for extensions and one for a door / reception phone. The Orchid PBX416 can be programmed with virtually any standard telephone set.

This is an excellent system but it is not expandable.  If you are going to require more than 4 lines and 16 extensions we suggest you consider the  NEC XN120,  or Panasonic KX-TES824.

2.  Where to locate the system

The system should be located near your exchange line sockets and a power point.  The Orchid 416 is wall mounted by drilling two holes, 16cm apart.  The installer simply adjusts the screw heads until the PBX fits firmly against the wall.

3. Connecting the exchange lines

Four line cords are provided with the system that have an RJ11 plug on one end and a BT plug on the other.  You simply plug the RJ-11 end of the lead into the Orchid PBX, the other end will be plugged into the BT (or other service provider) line socket.  If you need to locate the Control Unit some distance from the line sockets...you can extend the lead by using a connecting box (such as an 84A).  You then connect the two wires to pins 2 and 5 of the BT line socket.  These are not polarity sensitive so it doesn't matter which way around the two wires are connected.

4. Connecting the extensions (plug & play)

The Orchid PBX 416 has an RJ11 output for each of the eight extensions.  Wiring can be avoided by using our ready made RJ-11 to BT socket cords (shown below).  You simply plug the cords into the RJ-11 output on the Orchid control unit and plug your telephone in to the other end....that really is all there is to it.

5. Music on hold

The Orchid PBX has an internal electronically generated on-hold tone but we recommend you make use of the external music-on-hold port, located at the rear of the unit.  This will provide more variety of music and a professional image.  A CD player can be connected to this port using an audio cable with a 3.5mm plugs on both ends.  We offer a suitable CD player that is supplied with the audio lead for a total of £39.99 ex vat.  If you don't want any music on hold simply connect a standard audio plug (3.5mm) into the music on hold jack but don't connect it to an external music device.

6. Programming

The Orchid PBX416 is supplied with a CD that includes installation notes, user guide and programming information.  Programming is accomplished with a standard single line phone.  Details concerning system programming can be found in the System Administration Guide.

7. Connecting the extensions when plug and play is not suitable - If your phones are located in several rooms, you may decide to 'wire' all or some of the extensions and not use the the plug and play cords shown in paragraph 4.    The diagram below shows you how to do it but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to give us a call.

  • Cut an RJ11 line cord in half, leaving you with two cords each with an RJ11 plug on one end and open on the other.

  • A 78a connecting box (picture below) is a 4-pair device.  As each telephone extension socket requires one pair (2wires)...one 84a will be required for four extensions.

  • The 84A connection box uses standard IDC punch down points to connect the wires.  You can purchase a punch down tool from us (50p) if you don't already have one. You simply plug one end of your RJ11 cable into the Orchid extension socket...the other end connects to the 78A box.

  • Run the telephone cable to the appropriate extension phone socket and connect the two wires to pins 2 & 5.  This connection is not polarity sensitive...meaning it doesn't matter which way around you connect the two wires.  The other end of this cable connects to the 78A box.
